The Soldier’s Clever Overcoat
Have you ever heard someone brag so much about a thing that it started to sound magical?
Well, that’s exactly what happened one chilly evening when a rich gentleman met a tired old soldier on the road.

A Strange Conversation by the Campfire |
The gentleman looked at the coat and laughed a little.
“Surely that rag can’t be worth much,” he said.
But the soldier smiled proudly.
“Oh, sir,” he replied, “this overcoat is the best thing I own! When I sleep, I spread it under me, rest my head on it, and cover myself with it too.”
The gentleman blinked in surprise.
“One coat does all that?”
The soldier nodded happily.

The Gentleman Buys the Coat |
“What a wonderful coat!” he thought. “I’ll never need blankets or pillows again!”
Right there on the road, he offered to buy the overcoat from the soldier. After some bargaining, they agreed on twenty-five rubles.
The gentleman hurried home proudly carrying the coat over his arm.
As soon as he entered the house, he called out to his wife.
“Look what I bought! Now I don’t need a feather bed, pillows, or blankets anymore!”
His wife raised an eyebrow.
“Really?” she asked. “And how exactly will that work?”
But the gentleman was too pleased with himself to listen.

A Very Uncomfortable Night |
He spread the coat on the floor.
Then he stopped.
The soldier had said he used the coat as a pillow too. But if the coat was under him, what could he put under his head?
After a moment of confusion, he folded one sleeve and rested his head on it.
Now another problem appeared.
If his body was lying on the coat, what would cover him?
He pulled and tugged at the poor coat all night long, but no matter what he did, his feet stayed cold and his back hurt terribly.
By morning, he was grumpy, tired, and angry.
“This soldier tricked me!” he shouted.

Complaint to the Commander |
“That soldier cheated me!” he complained loudly.
The commander listened carefully and ordered the soldier to be brought in at once.
Soon, the soldier entered the room calmly and saluted.
The commander frowned.
“Did you deceive this man?”
“Not at all, Your Honor,” the soldier answered politely.
Then, without another word, he spread the overcoat on the ground.
He folded one sleeve under his head and pulled the bottom part over himself like a blanket.
“There,” he said with a peaceful smile. “After a long day of marching, this feels wonderful.”
Everyone in the room stared silently.

The Commander’s Wise Lesson |
The commander suddenly burst out laughing.
Then he patted the soldier on the shoulder and even rewarded him with a drink.
Turning toward the gentleman, he said kindly:
“A hardworking person can sleep peacefully even on a stone. But a lazy person may not sleep well even on the softest feather bed.”
The gentleman lowered his head in embarrassment.
At last, he understood the real secret of the overcoat.
It wasn’t magic at all.
The soldier slept well because he worked hard and was grateful for what he had.
Conclusion / Moral
Comfort does not come from expensive things alone. A hardworking and thankful person can rest peacefully anywhere, while someone lazy may never feel satisfied.
3 Key Lessons
- Hard work brings peaceful sleep and happiness.
- Expensive things are useless without the right attitude.
- Be thankful for what you have instead of chasing comfort all the time.
