The Story of the Hare

The Story of the Hare

Have you ever seen footprints in fresh snow and wondered where they lead?

One cold winter morning, some hunters found strange tracks twisting all across the snowy fields. The trail went forward, then backward, then sideways, and sometimes disappeared completely.

The hunters scratched their heads.

“What a clever hare!” one of them said.

But the truth was something very different.

The Story of the Hare

A Busy Night in the Snow

When the forest became dark and quiet, the hares woke up.

Forest hares nibbled on tree bark. Field hares searched for frozen grass and winter crops. Others hurried near barns and threshing floors, looking for bits of grain left behind by farmers.

The snow sparkled under the moonlight while the hares hopped through the cold night.

The little gray hare in our story was fast. Very fast.

At night, he felt brave.

He dashed across fields without stopping. His paws made long straight trails in the snow.

But bravery only lasted until morning.

The Story of the Hare

Morning Sounds

As the sky slowly turned pale blue, the world began to wake up.

Far away, dogs barked loudly.

A sleigh rattled across the frozen road.

Men shouted to one another in the fields.

And somewhere deep in the forest, a hungry wolf moved through the trees.

The hare froze.

His ears stood straight up.

Oh no, he whispered. Someone is coming!

Suddenly, the hare leaped backward.

Then he raced forward again.

A branch cracked nearby, and the frightened hare jumped far to the side.

His little heart pounded wildly.

The Story of the Hare

The Confusing Trail

The poor hare became more frightened every minute.

He ran one way.

Then another.

Sometimes he even ran back over his own footprints.

He zigzagged across the fields like a bouncing snowball.

The hare was not trying to trick anyone.

He was simply scared of everything.

At last, when daylight fully arrived, the exhausted little hare found a quiet place beneath a snowy bush and curled into a tiny ball.

His nose twitched.

His eyes slowly closed.

Finally, he rested.

The Story of the Hare

The Hunters Arrive

Later that morning, hunters and dogs followed the hare’s tracks through the snow.

At first, the trail looked easy to follow.

But soon the footprints crossed over each other again and again.

The tracks suddenly turned backward.

Then sideways.

Then vanished in giant leaps.

The hunters stopped in confusion.

“How clever this hare must be!” one hunter said.

Another shook his head.

“This is the smartest hare in the forest.”

Hidden safely under the bush, the hare listened quietly.

If only the hunters knew the truth.

The little hare was not clever at all.

He was simply afraid.

And somehow, that fear kept him safe.

The Story of the Hare

Sometimes Fear Can Help

Not every creature is brave like a lion.

Some animals survive because they are careful.

The little hare’s fear made him quick, alert, and ready to run whenever danger appeared.

And without even knowing it, he confused all his enemies.

Moral of Story

Sometimes the things we think are weaknesses can protect us in surprising ways. The hare was timid and fearful, but his quick thinking and careful movements helped him stay alive in a dangerous world.

3 Key Lessons

  1. Being careful can sometimes keep us safe.
  2. Everyone survives in their own special way.
  3. Fear is not always bad if it helps us avoid danger.
