Polkan blinked in surprise.
“You do?”
The bear leaned closer and whispered his clever plan.
“Tell me where the master’s family works in the rye fields,” he said.
Polkan explained where the women harvested grain during the day.
The bear grinned.
“Tomorrow, I shall sneak into the field and carry away the master’s baby. Then you will chase after me, rescue the child, and return it safely.”
Polkan’s eyes widened.
“The master will think you are a hero,” the bear finished.

The next morning, the women worked in the tall rye fields beneath the hot summer sun.
Nearby, the master’s baby slept peacefully in a little cradle.
Quietly, silently, Mikhail Ivanovich crept through the grass.
Not a single woman noticed him.
Then suddenly—
SWOOP!
The great bear lifted the cradle and dashed toward the forest!
“The bear!” screamed the women.
“He took the baby!”
The women dropped their sickles and ran in circles, crying and shouting in fear.
But the bear disappeared into the trees like a shadow.

Just then, old Polkan came racing from nowhere.
Barking loudly, he charged into the forest after the bear.
The women gasped.

Deep among the trees, the bear gently placed the baby down.

Polkan carefully picked up the child and hurried back to the field.
The women cried with joy when they saw him.
“He saved the baby!”
“Our brave Polkan!”
They hugged the old dog and fed him soft bread and scraps of meat.
For the first time in many days, Polkan’s tail wagged happily.

The women brought Polkan back to his master’s house.
“You chased this good dog away,” they scolded the master. “But he saved your child from the bear!”
The master felt ashamed.
At once, he welcomed Polkan home again.
From that day on, Polkan slept beside the warm porch once more. He was given fresh milk, tasty meat, and a soft place to rest.
And often, while lying peacefully in the evening sun, Polkan remembered his friend in the forest.
“What a wonderful bear,” he would whisper softly. “I shall never forget dear Mikhail Ivanovich.”
