Suddenly, a sly fox quietly walked beneath the tree. She looked up at the black grouse with a fake smile and spoke in a soft, friendly voice.

“Hello, dear Black Grouse! I came as soon as I heard your beautiful voice.”

Teterev politely thanked her, but he remained cautious. He knew the fox was famous for her tricks and clever lies.

Pretending she could not hear him, the fox called out again.

“What did you say, my friend? Please come down onto the grass so we can walk and talk together. I can’t hear you from way up there.”

Teterev immediately understood her plan. The fox wanted him to come down where she could easily catch him. Calmly, the wise bird replied,

“I am afraid to walk on the ground. It is dangerous for birds like me.”

The fox quickly answered, “Are you afraid of me?”

Teterev wisely answered, “I am not only afraid of you. There are many dangerous animals in the forest.”

The fox quickly came up with another trick.

“Oh no, dear friend! Today, peace has been declared throughout the land. Animals no longer harm each other anymore.”

The fox smiled confidently, hoping the bird would finally come down from the tree.

“That is wonderful news,” said Teterev. “Because I can hear dogs running this way. If peace truly exists, then you have nothing to fear.”

The moment the fox heard about the dogs, her ears stood straight up in fear. She nervously looked around and began stepping backward.

“Where are you going?” asked Teterev. “Didn’t you say the dogs would not hurt you now?”

The fox quickly replied, “Maybe they did not hear about the peace decree!”

And with that, she turned and ran deep into the forest as fast as she could.

Teterev stayed safely on his branch, smiling proudly for having outsmarted the cunning fox.
