How a Clever Soldier Cooked Porridge from an Iron Axe
The sun was dipping low over a dusty village when an old soldier, worn thin by miles of marching and years of service, reached the final hut on the road. His stomach was a hollow cavern of hunger. He knocked firmly, and a sharp-eyed old woman opened the door. Though her larder was secretly bursting with food, she put on a mask of poverty, claiming she hadn't a single crumb to share with a passing servant. The soldier, seeing through her ruse but remaining polite, noticed a heavy iron axe resting under a bench.
"If there is nothing else," the soldier said with a wink, "one can always cook porridge from an axe." Intrigued by such a culinary impossibility, the old woman’s curiosity overcame her greed. She brought him a heavy iron cauldron. The soldier meticulously washed the axe, dropped it into the pot, and set it over a roaring fire. As the water began to bubble, the woman watched with wide, unblinking eyes, convinced she was about to witness a miracle of alchemy.
Stirring the brew with a steady hand, the soldier tasted the water and sighed. "It will be delicious," he remarked, "but it's a pity we have no salt." Eager to perfect the magic, the woman scurried to find her salt. Then came the "need" for a handful of grain to thicken it, followed by a dollop of butter to make it truly "royal." Spellbound by the soldier’s confidence, the woman brought out her hidden treasures, seasoning the "axe water" until it transformed into a thick, fragrant, and very real feast.
The two sat down to a hearty meal, the old woman marveling at how "axe porridge" could taste so divine. When she asked when they would finally eat the axe itself, the soldier shook his head with a grin. "It's still a bit tough," he explained, "I'll finish simmering it on the road for my breakfast." He tucked the axe into his knapsack, thanked his hostess, and marched away into the morning mist—leaving the woman with a full belly and a very empty axe-bench.
Moral of the Story
Resourcefulness and wit can unlock doors that greed has bolted shut. The story teaches us that by understanding human nature and using a bit of cleverness, we can find solutions even when people are unwilling to help. Sometimes, a little "magic" is just a way to invite someone to be generous.
