Why Honesty Always Wins in the End

Pavlik and Kotka set out early in the morning, excited to go fishing by the river. The sun was warm, the water shimmered, and the birds sang cheerfully. But despite waiting for hours, not a single fish bit their hooks. Disappointed and tired, the boys packed up and started walking back home.

On their way back, they passed a collective farm garden filled with fresh, green cucumbers. Temptation took over. Without thinking much, the boys sneaked in and filled their pockets with cucumbers. Suddenly, a watchman spotted them and blew his whistle loudly. Startled, they ran away as fast as they could.

As they ran, Pavlik began to worry about getting into trouble. To avoid blame, he secretly handed all his cucumbers to Kotka. Kotka, unaware of the consequences, happily took them and went home proudly.

Kotka entered his home with a big smile and showed his mother the cucumbers. But her smile quickly faded as she questioned him. When she realized he had taken them without permission, her face turned serious. She explained firmly that taking something that isn’t yours is stealing.

Despite Kotka’s fear and tears, his mother insisted he return the cucumbers immediately. She explained that the watchman could get into trouble for the missing vegetables. Even though it was dark and scary outside, she stood firm. Kotka had to make things right.
