A Sunny Winter Morning
Winter had arrived, but the sun was shining brightly across the fields. A green grasshopper sat on a smooth rock, stretching his legs in the warm sunlight.
Although the sunshine felt wonderful, the grasshopper had a problem.
His stomach was growling loudly.
He had not eaten anything since the night before.
The grasshopper rubbed his tummy and sighed.
"I must find something to eat," he said.
So he hopped across the field, searching everywhere for food.

A Busy Line of Ants
As he wandered along a path, the grasshopper noticed something interesting.
A long line of tiny ants was marching across the ground.
Each ant carried a grain of food on its back.
The ants worked together, carefully carrying their supplies into a small hole beneath a tree.
The grasshopper watched them for a moment.
Then he slowly walked over.

A Humble Request
The grasshopper lowered his head politely.
"Dear ants," he said, "could you please spare a few grains for me? I haven't eaten since yesterday, and I'm very hungry."
The ants paused their work.
One wise ant stepped forward and looked kindly at him.
"We would like to help," said the ant. "But tell us, what were you doing all summer?"
The grasshopper shuffled his feet nervously.

The Summer He Remembered
The grasshopper thought back to the warm summer months.
He remembered singing songs from morning until sunset.
He remembered dancing through fields of flowers and playing beneath the blue sky.
The days had been filled with fun.
But he had never stopped to gather food.
The grasshopper sighed.
"To be honest," he admitted, "I spent the whole summer singing and enjoying myself. I didn't store any food for winter."

The Ant's Reply
The ants looked at one another.
Then the wise ant smiled gently.
"You spent the summer singing?" asked the ant.
"Yes," replied the grasshopper.
The ant nodded.
"Then perhaps you should dance through the winter too."
For a moment, the grasshopper had nothing to say.
The grasshopper understood exactly what the ant meant.
While the ants had been working and preparing, he had only been thinking about having fun.

A Lesson in the Cold
The grasshopper slowly walked away from the anthill.
The cold winter wind blew across the field.
He felt sad, but he also realized something important.
Fun and games are wonderful, but responsibilities are important too.
The ants were safe because they had prepared ahead of time.
The grasshopper promised himself that when summer returned, he would work hard and save food for the future.
